Gordon St Coffee

Counter - Gordon St Coffee - RYE Design

Specialist Scottish coffee roaster Gordon St Coffee engaged RYE Design to design and deliver their second shop situated in the centre of Edinburgh. The unit procured by the brand is situated on the ground floor of the new boutique Market Street Hotel and occupies a frontage onto Market St itself. The brief for the interiors set by the client centred around the evolution of the material palette and design language delivered in the brand’s flagship store in Glasgow. Gordon St Coffee as a specialist roaster had also teamed up with award winning confectionary connoisseur Iain Burnett and his brand Highland Chocolatier to deliver chocolates to complement their different house blends on offer in Edinburgh. This paired offering requiring greater technical coordination with specialist equipment to preserve and present the hand-crafted chocolates alongside the activities of the coffee roaster.

We focused our design on re-interpreting and evolving the key elements of the brand identity established in the company’s flagship store in Glasgow Central Station. The colours in the hexagon tile pattern maintain this consistency however the pattern itself was re-designed to a more appropriate scale, creating clean directional lines along the front of the counter, drawing customers into the business. The monolithic Carrara marble counter was positioned parallel to the curtain wall glazing creating clear site lines into the unit from Market St. Solid oak shelving was designed to display the various blends of coffee roasted on site and stained to a tone corresponding with the brand’s khaki coloured packaging. The metal detailing throughout the design utilises blackened steel and dome head fixings which reference the industrial heritage of the brand.
