THE BRIEF

RYE Design were commissioned to design and deliver the extension of a Victorian townhouse in Camden for a private client. The property sits within the Willes Road Conservation Area and required specific attention to the detailing of its extension in order to ensure it did not compromise the existing character of the street. Our brief was to extend the property in order to create an enlarged kitchen area with a fully glazed rear elevation as well as a new glazed side infill extension. The focus for the client was the creation of a larger kitchen and dining area that were connected both to one another and the original Victorian living room at the front of the property. The client wanted to re-instate period pieces where possible including the architectural retention of the rear bay window. The rear external window had to be converted into a new internal set of doors which connect the rear garden through to the front of the property. Alongside the architectural design of the property’s conversion RYE Design were engage to complete the interior design of the internal spaces generated.

THE SCHEME

RYE Design secured full planning permission for a modest rear extension and full width glazed infill extension generating a much larger ground floor kitchen and dining area. We oversaw the design of the interiors for the new kitchen and dining area working closely with the client to accommodate existing pieces of re-purpose retained architectural elements within the property. Across the rear elevation the existing bay window was converted into a doorway connecting the front drawing rooms with the new glazed infill extension. The design for the kitchen takes on the contemporary lines of the new metal framed glazed rear doors using oak worktops and textured composite materials to create streamlined concealed storage in a modern palette. At first floor level the master bedroom continues into an open plan en-suite bathroom. Addition height has been gained by removing the ceiling and reinforcing the roof-structure above creating a double height space across half of the room. Externally minimal glass beams support new glazed roofs to the rear extensions allowing clear sight lines to the tree canopies of the neighbouring gardens.
